ANGELS FLIGHT

Built in 1901, Angels Flight has two red cars – named Sinai and Olivet – and an ornate archway labeled “Angeles Flight”, to ferry passengers up and down a steep incline in the Bunker Hill district. The landmark funicular railway is said to be the world's shortest incorporated railway; it's a public utility operated as a franchise granted by the City of L. A. Closed for restoration, it will reopen “in the near future.” Angels Flight was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 13, 2000.

DLANC Sustainability Committee - Message from Board Chair Ashley Z. Hand

Dear Neighbors,

For the past two years, I have been dedicated to advancing a culture of sustainability Downtown with your partnership. I am writing to tender my resignation as Chair of the DLANC Sustainability Committee, effective September 1, 2010. I have truly enjoyed working with all of my neighbors and thank you for the privilege of serving you as a publicly-elected member of the DLANC Board of Directors and Chair of the Sustainability Committee.

Join DLANC Sustainability, PROS, and Arts Committees at Park[ing] Day

Park[ing] Day 2010 is on Friday, September 17. This is the fourth year for Park[ing] Day LA - an international, city-wide event highlighting the importance of parks and open space in our urban neighborhood. By taking over a parking spot, community members build small parks-for-a-day with their own vision of the future.

Sustainability Committee reflections on past two years and welcome to new Board members

An introduction to community-driven initiatives and lessons learned (JULY 14, 2010) At an "informal" DLANC Board Meeting on Tuesday, July 13 at the Los Angeles Theater, new members of the DLANC Board of Directors were introduced to the work of the Sustainability Committee over the past two years. The Committee, founded by outgoing Private Sector Workforce Director Ashley (Zarella) Hand, LEED AP, Assoc. AIA, has received statewide recognition for best practices in community planning and sustainability goal setting.

Board approves roles and responsibilities for DLANC

In an effort to develop a more transparent and accountable leadership for our community, the DLANC Board of Directors approved new roles and responsibilities to supplement the existing Bylaws. By defining expectations of the members of the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and Committee Chairs, the 2008-2010 DLANC Board hopes to help the transition for the incoming board to be elected in late June 2010.


All motions outlined in the attached document were approved by the Board for implementation.

Harlem Place Project - Starting a Conversation about Green Alleys Downtown

At a community presentation of the Harlem Place Project, the graduate student team from the UCSB Bren School of Environmental Science and Management discussed the impacts of transforming small-scale open space on both a local and regional level. With more than 900 miles of alleys and many park-poor neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles, the DLANC Sustainability Committee is interested in understanding more about what can be done to enhance our urban environment, improve stormwater quality and quantity, air quality, reduce heat island effect, and create a more livable neighborhood.

DLANC Sustainability Committee supports CAR-FREE FRIDAYS

At the April 2010 meeting, the DLANC Board supported the Sustainability Committee motion to support CAR-FREE FRIDAYS, the last Friday of every month. The Sustainability Committee is now reaching out to City Councilmembers Jan Perry, Jose Huizar, and Ed Reyes to partner with us as participants, supporters, and advocates in the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition’s campaign.

DLANC Board Member to be recognized by LA County Supervisors with Green Leadership Award.

On April 20, DLANC Area-Wide Workforce Private Sector Director Ashley Zarella Hand, LEED AP BD+C, Assoc. AIA will be awarded a 2010 Green Leadership Award by the County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors for the work she has initiated in Downtown Los Angeles. The Green Leadership Award program recognizes outstanding efforts by individuals and organizations in developing and implementing innovative strategies to enhance our environmental sustainability. Mrs.
