ST. VIBIANA
St. Vibiana (built 1871-1876) was modeled after a Barcelona cathedral. In 1995 the L.A. Catholic Archdiocese decided to demolish the baroque-like Italianate church damaged in the 1994 earthquake. Lawyers, activists, and the L.A. Conservancy hastily gathered restraining orders and public support to save the community landmark. St. Vibiana is now a venue for special events and concerts.
Green Pockets: A Green Parking Lot for Downtown Youth Center
Green Pockets and Downtown Los Angeles Youth & Cultural Center
We are helping the Downtown Los Angeles Youth & Cultural Center as they build a more environmentally-friendly parking lot by building partnerships within our neighborhood to support their efforts. This parking lot is an important revenue-generator for the Youth Center and the Sustainability Committee has been helping them to consider more green solutions - how do you build a parking lot that allows for stormwater management, lessens the heat island effect, and creates an adaptable outdoor space for the youth of the surrounding community?
We have a team of designers, community members, and technical experts helping the Youth Center develop a plan for this exciting pilot project. We invite you to join us for a discussion of this plan this Thursday, July 15 at 7:00pm at the Downtown Los Angeles Youth & Cultural Center (132 S. Beaudry Avenue).
