PERSHING SQUARE

Pershing Square has reflected Los Angeles' economic and social growth since its inception in 1866 as β€œLa Plaza Abaja.” It was later dedicated to the American military hero of WWI, General Pershing. In the1950s progress required a parking lot for 1800 cars – built under the Square. Pershing Square serves as an outdoor concert and event center providing numerous free programs for the community.

Sustainability Committee reflections on past two years and welcome to new Board members

An introduction to community-driven initiatives and lessons learned (JULY 14, 2010) At an "informal" DLANC Board Meeting on Tuesday, July 13 at the Los Angeles Theater, new members of the DLANC Board of Directors were introduced to the work of the Sustainability Committee over the past two years. The Committee, founded by outgoing Private Sector Workforce Director Ashley (Zarella) Hand, LEED AP, Assoc. AIA, has received statewide recognition for best practices in community planning and sustainability goal setting. "We each have the opportunity through our involvement with the Neighborhood Council," said Hand, "to shape the future of our city and I congratulate you all for your efforts and interest to pursue election to a public board."

Providing a framework from which to start

The Sustainability Committee is "dedicated to empowering the Downtown community to create a culture of sustainability. We will work with the community to increase accessibility to existing programs and services through outreach and public education. We will identify and create opportunities for new programming and partnerships to meet our goals for a more livable, affordable, and efficient urban center."
