ST. VIBIANA
St. Vibiana (built 1871-1876) was modeled after a Barcelona cathedral. In 1995 the L.A. Catholic Archdiocese decided to demolish the baroque-like Italianate church damaged in the 1994 earthquake. Lawyers, activists, and the L.A. Conservancy hastily gathered restraining orders and public support to save the community landmark. St. Vibiana is now a venue for special events and concerts.
Join DLANC Sustainability, PROS, and Arts Committees at Park[ing] Day
Park[ing] Day 2010 is on Friday, September 17. This is the fourth year for Park[ing] Day LA - an international, city-wide event highlighting the importance of parks and open space in our urban neighborhood. By taking over a parking spot, community members build small parks-for-a-day with their own vision of the future.
Imagine more green space. What would our city look like?
This year, the DLANC Sustainability Committee invites all interested persons to a Park[ing] Day LA planning meeting at the railLA Exhibition Space (525 S. Flower Street, enter from Figueroa). We will be discussing project ideas and resources and continue to build the network that supports this effort annually.
Not just a park[ing] space - a park[ing] LOT!
This year the DLANC Sustainability Committee would like you and all community partners to come and stage a green park[ing] lot - we hope to not only fill an entire blank lot with little parks but also plan to introduce our community to a proposed pilot project. We are at the very early stages of learning what it will take for the Downtown Los Angeles Youth & Cultural Center to build a "green parking lot" which will help them generate much-needed revenue for their operations at the corner of W. 2nd Street and South Beaudry (see map here). Email us at sustainability@dlanc.com if you would like to get involved or attend this meeting!
