PERSHING SQUARE

Pershing Square has reflected Los Angeles' economic and social growth since its inception in 1866 as “La Plaza Abaja.” It was later dedicated to the American military hero of WWI, General Pershing. In the1950s progress required a parking lot for 1800 cars – built under the Square. Pershing Square serves as an outdoor concert and event center providing numerous free programs for the community.

DLANC votes to support planning of 2010 Downtown CicLAvia event

At the January board meeting, DLANC voted to support the planning of a first-ever CicLAvia event for Downtown. Ciclovía, started in Bogotá, Colombia over thirty years ago as a response to the congestion and pollution of city streets, is coming to Los Angeles and the planning committee is working to get community support of this effort.

CicLAvia creates a park by removing motorized traffic from city streets, and encourages people to come out and carve a new landscape for themselves. The Sustainability Committee and Parks, Recreation & Open Space Committee plan to support this effort in the coming months.
